Labour ministers must lead by example
Written by Philip C James and published in Western Daily Press on Sat 13th Jan 2007
Public outcry can sway politicians. It is good that Tony Blair has bowed to pressure to admit publicly how important it is leading by personal example when talking about global warming.

Rethink mayoral appointments
Written by Cllr John Kiely, Liberal Democrat, Easton Ward and published in Bristol Evening Post on Fri 2nd Jun 2006
Sir, people who say that the office of Lord Mayor should be above party politics should direct their ire at the Tories.

Secure, sustainable energy - taking responsibility for the damage we are doing to our climate
Written by Philip C James and published in Letter as sent to the Western Daily Press on Thu 1st Jun 2006
Sir, several correspondents have complained that wind turbines despoil our rural landscape. With rare exceptions, that landscape is of course a man-made machine designed and shaped for the production of our food. Why are we so happy to see our food being grown when we visit the countryside, yet so negative about seeing the energy we consume being generated in the same location?

The truly lasting nuclear legacy of Tony Blair's premiership
Written by Philip C James and published in As sent to the Bristol Evening Post on Sat 20th May 2006
Sir, in the Prime Minister's own words, "nuclear power is back with a vengeance". Talk of revenge is not the best way to reassure the public that a massive increase in nuclear power is the only or the best way to counter global warming and ensure security of energy supply.

Tory Politican Ditches Own Policy To Save Political Skin
Written by Philip C James, Prospective Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol East on Wed 20th Apr 2005
Sir, the Conservatives voted in Parliament to increase the frequency that properties are re-valued to calculate their Council Tax Band. What does that say about the sincerity of Michael Howard's promise to cancel this round of Council Tax re-valuation in England?

Tory Smears Against the Lib Dems Smack of Desperation
Written by Philip C James [Liberal Democrats' Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bristol East] on Sat 26th Mar 2005
Sir, recent Tory party leaflets have been spreading a new smear against the Liberal Democrats; claiming we will introduce "40 stealth taxes" if we form a government. I am glad the Conservatives now realise what the public has long known; the Liberal Democrats are ready to form a fairer, more honest government than the Tories. However the rest of their claim is untrue.

Absolutely Convinced About Iran, Mr Blair?
Written by Philip C James [Liberal Democrats' Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bristol East] on Fri 25th Mar 2005
Sir, when I was a lad in the 1970s, one TV image impressed me so much it influences my thinking to this day. It was the sight of an elderly bespectacled egg-headed man shuffling fully-dressed into a muddy puddle.

Lib-Dem Thinking Crystal Clear On Need To Axe Council Tax
Written by Philip C James, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Bristol East and published in the Western Daily Press on Sat 26th Mar 2005
Sir, Ms Glaisher can rest assured the British public has no need to fear innovative thinking on tax by the Liberal Democrats (Letters, 16 March). Our campaign to abolish the unfair Council Tax and replace it with a tax based on ability to pay appeals to people I talk with on their doorsteps. Our thinking has been vindicated by independent accountancy institutions. In fact, just about the only people who fear abolishing the Council Tax are the big-wigs of the New Labour and Conservative parties, who have no answer themselves.

Liberal Democrats - the real challenger to New Labour in Bristol East
Written by Philip C James [Liberal Democrats' Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bristol East] and published in the Bristol Evening Post on Tue 15th Mar 2005
Sir, Mr Webb may be surprised to learn that many more people in Bristol East know my name than he has implied (Open Lines, 10 March). Since my selection as the Liberal Democrats' Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, I have spent numerous weekday evenings and weekends on the doorsteps of Bristol East speaking to residents; hearing their views on New Labour's managerial incompetence, and how Michael Howard's Conservatives are no better.

New Labour's Creative Management Accounting Hurts The Most Vulnerable in Bristol
Written by Philip C James, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Bristol East on Thu 10th Mar 2005
Sir, anyone writing a textbook on the pitfalls of management accountancy will want to frame the letter from the New Labour executive member for social services and health and hang it above their mantelpiece (Letters, 4 March). Cllr Robin Moss wrote "Continuing to provide meals in their current form is becoming more expensive as fewer people use the service, pushing up the real cost of each meal...". New Labour has made a classic error that business administration students learn about before they are knee-high to their guru.

A clear choice - New Labour spin doctor or local-people-before-party Liberal Democrat
Written by Cllr John Kiely, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Easton Ward and published in the Bristol Evening Post on Thu 3rd Mar 2005
Sir, Ms McCarthy (Labour candidate, Bristol East) compares Bristol to Luton where she currently lives. While it would be difficult to imagine two places so completely different, in one instance they are the same, as the Liberal Democrats are the main challengers to Labour. Local people in both places are fed up with Blairite Labour MPs who vote for the party line against the wishes or interests of their constituents.

Evening Post Headline: Labour Should Pick A Local Candidate
Written by S R Comer and published in the Bristol Evening Post on Sat 26th Feb 2005
Sir, New Labour in Bristol East has selected Kerry McCarthy, a lawyer and party adviser from the east of England, as its candidate for the General Election ("Labour gives its vote to Kerry", Post, February 21). This was done in a very cynical way, the timing being designed to ensure that the shortlist was decided not by local party members but by New Labour HQ.

Working Together To Combat Climate Change
Written by Philip C James, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Bristol East on Fri 25th Feb 2005
Sir, the Kyoto Protocol entered into force this month. Charles Kennedy wrote to Tony Blair and Michael Howard on that historic day, calling for consensus on halting the damaging climate change now being caused by mankind. Mr Kennedy recalled how well the recent House of Commons opposition day debate on the environment had gone. Though called by the Liberal Democrats, backbenchers of all parties had shown strong agreement that climate change poses the single greatest threat to humanity.

British Troops Must Now Prepare To Leave Iraq
Written by Rt Hon Charles Kennedy MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats and published in The Independent on Tue 1st Feb 2005
It has been tempting to pre-judge the Iraq elections - to declare that they are neither "free nor fair" by comparing them with the kind of election we are used to. For those of us who opposed the war from the outset, there is a gnawing sense of outrage at the loss of life, the instability and the violence now endemic in Iraq. That should not lead us to an unbalanced approach to either the elections themselves or where we go from here.

New Labour doesn't listen to its own MPs let alone local people
Written by Philip C James, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Bristol East on Mon 17th Jan 2005

Liberal Democrats are the Effective Opposition to New Labour
Written by Philip C James, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Bristol East on Fri 7th Jan 2005
Sir, polls demonstrate the public is not impressed with Michael Howard or his leadership of the Conservative party. The recent letters from Conservative Party supporters Manning and Moore are unlikely to change voters' minds.

Re-establishing Public Confidence in Politicians
Written by Philip C James, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Bristol East and published in the Western Daily Press on Sat 18th Dec 2004
Sir, David Blunkett has resigned as Home Secretary. He has taken responsibility for the actions of officials in his department. I applaud him for sticking to his principles. Of course, he could do little else, having portrayed himself as a man of strong principles. Nevertheless, we understand he must be very disappointed to have to give up a job he enjoyed doing in such a fashion.

10,000
Written by Philip C James, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Bristol East and published in the Bristol Evening Post on Sat 18th Dec 2004
Sir, I am afraid that Tom Scott has perhaps been misled by New Labour party propaganda (Letters, 15 December). The figure of 10,000 he has heard is the number of extra police officers a Liberal Democrat government will put on the streets to deter crime and improve detection.

Why Should We Believe Tony Blair?
Written by Philip C James, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Bristol East and published in the Bristol Evening Post on Sat 23rd Oct 2004
