Sir, the Labour-leaning Fabian Society has come out in favour of a top rate of income tax of 50 per cent on those earning more than £100,000 a year, an idea first proposed by the Liberal Democrats, the effective opposition to New Labour.
Government minister Helen Liddle rejected the idea last Monday, claiming top-earners would get around extra income tax with the help of imaginative accountants.
Labour has given up setting taxes based on fairness, preferring to milk the poor because council tax and taxes on the basics of life are easier to collect.
