Bristol East Prospective Member of Parliament, Mike Popham has condemned the actions of Bristol Conservatives. "Calling a special Council meeting to try to bring down the administration of the City Council as the effects of the global recession are hitting the city's economy hard is a waste of public money at a time when we should all be working hard to stave off the credit crunch", Mike said.
This attempt to destabilise the Council a few months before an election is the last thing the City needs. The recession is biting ever deeper into people's pockets. We must inspire confidence in business investors, employers and government ministers to gain the resources we need to fight the recession and provide the jobs and opportunities for Bristol people.
Lib Dem Leader Cllr Barbara Janke said:
"With the challenges faced by education in the city, schools also need confidence that the city will receive the £12m of investment for the city's primary schools. Parties must work together to provide support and confidence for the sake of the city's children.
"Having removed the Lib Dem administration in 2007 and supported Labour for two years, the Conservatives show themselves to be no more than political wreckers. As the smallest party, they make little positive contribution to the running of the city. These wrecking tactics will continue to damage the reputation of the city if the Tories continue to put political manoeuvring before the best interests of the people we serve."
