On Monday 9th February employers and students joined in a conference at the City's Council House to help Bristol post 16 students (from Ashton Park Post 16 Centry, St Brendans Sixth Form College and City of Bristol College) gain a better understanding of the public sector in Bristol.
Prospective Member of Parliament for Bristol East, Mike Popham attended with 14 other industry volunteers. He worked with the students and provided answers to questions in a quick question routine that enabled most to engage with him throughout the 3-hour period.
Jo Adlam from Bristol's 14-19 Work Related Learning Project within Bristol CYPS said "Our intention is to broaden horizons, raise aspirations and bring to life what our students are studying. We worked closely with the course tutors planning the event to match course needs with the activities that we run. We also run these events with Year 10 students (14 years) to support their studies in the same way. In the last year we have run conferences with a focus on performing arts and another on the sports industry. We also have planned for this year conferences in Health & Social Care, Media, Hospitality/Leisure and Business."
Mike said "I thought the young people were marvellous. Invariably, they were so refreshingly clear sighted in their questions. These activities make a difference to the students' perspectives of what the public sector could offer them after their education, and shows them how their course is preparing them and the range of jobs and roles that might materialise."
"I hope that the event will have broadened horizons and raised aspirations of what is on offer. The students collected evidence from the day. All their hard work interviewing will go into their course portfolios, meeting the needs of their qualification.", he added.
