The brakes have been put on Labour's controversial plan for an incinerator in Avonmouth at tonight's Budget Council at Bristol. A successful Liberal Democrat amendment to the budget was passed which suspends spending on the proposed incinerator and instead directs it into increased street sweeping and home composting.
Cllr Gary Hopkins, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Environment said:
"This is good news and means that the Council should now look at alternatives to the costly incinerator. We want all four of the West of England authorities to be working together on this, something that hasn't been possible to date because of the controversial incinerator plans.
"We welcome that the Tories supported our position on this occasion, although it is a pity that they have wasted a year in forming this view. Otherwise this crazy proposal could have been gone up in smoke earlier."
