Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Barbara Janke has stepped in so that advice centres in some of the most deprived areas of the city can be saved, following the failure of the recently departed Labour administration to agree future funding for centres in Lockleaze, Kingsweston and Southmead.
Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Barbara Janke said:
"I was astonished to learn that the Labour administration were informed that funding was to have run out two years ago, when the Government announced the cuts in Neighbourhood Renewal funding, yet they have done nothing in all this time. It beggars belief that 3 weeks after resigning they are now complaining that these centres will close for lack of funding.
"People in these areas do not have the services available in many parts of the city, and are suffering even more as a result of the recession.
"They deserve better treatment than this. We will make sure that the needs of people in these areas are a high priority and find the funds that are needed."
Notes to Editors
The Centres were previously funded by Central Government through 'Neighbourhood Renewal Funding'. This funding ended in March 2008 and the Government's 'Neighbourhood Renewal Transition Funding' then gave projects an additional lifeline for a year while they sought alternative arrangements. This funding runs out on 31st March 2009 and no arrangements had been made by the Labour administration to enable the services the centres provide to continue.
