If Gordon thought he might have an easier week with Swine Flu dominating the news, he was wrong. Not only did he show contempt for Parliament by producing a ridiculous solution that no one agrees with to solve the MPs' expenses problem, but he then showed contempt for those who have risked death fighting for our country.
Nick Clegg has been leading the Lib Dems' campaign for justice for Gurkhas who have fought for our country, saying that if they have risked their life for this country they should be allowed to live in this country. Gordon Brown has resolutely opposed this strong moral argument, and yesterday he was defeated for the first time as PM in the Commons.
MPs voted by 267 to 246 for a Liberal Democrat motion offering all Gurkhas equal right of residence. The media have been showering Clegg with praise since, saying this has been his finest hour to date and has put him on the political map.
It was a historic event, as it was the first time a government had lost an "opposition day" vote since the 1970's. It will perhaps come as little surprise that all of Bristol's Labour MPs we on the wrong side of history, again. The Bristol MP who was on the right side of history was Stephen Williams, Lib Dem MP for Bristol West.
