Bristol East Spokesman Mike Popham says thank you to voters. The election period showed that people were fed up with the status quo and wanted a change to the business as usual attitude to politics. What I got was a clear message that people love Bristol but have a passion to make it even better. During the campaign I spoke to countless residents, delivered leaflets and answered your enquiries.
Overall Bristol East showed a 4.7% swing to the Lib Dems. Labour's candidate took an 8.9% drop in the vote. A hint that all was not well at the top. As the week unfolded Gordon Brown left government and a new coalition was formed.
The Lib Dems worked hard and returned even stronger support in Brislington West. We also made substantial progress in Brislington East and in Stockwood thanks to marvellous performances by Pauline Allen and Michael Goulden, each substantially growing their support.
In Brislington East we made a 14% swing. In Stockwood Michael's efforts saw growth in our support from 281 votes in 2007 to a massive 1367 votes this year. We are fighting hard in Bristol East to win seats from years of Labour and Tory control. A clear message to the fringe parties that the Lib Dems care across the City.
